“또한 예전에는 ‘거짓 맹세를 하지 마라.  주께한 맹세는 꼭 지켜야 한다’라는 계명을 받았다고 너희가 들었다.

그러나 내가 너희에게 말한다.

결코 맹세하지 마라.

하늘을 두고 맹세하지 마라.  하늘은 하나님의 보좌이기 때문이다.

땅을 두고 맹세하지 마라.  땅은 하나님의 발을 두시는 곳이기 때문이다.

예루살렘을 두고 맹세하지 마라.  예루살렘은 위대한 왕의 성이기 때문이다.

네 머리를 두고 맹세하지 마라.  너희는 머리카락 하나도 희게 하거나, 검게 할 수 없기 때문이다.

너희는 ‘그렇다’라고 할 때만 ‘예’하고, 아닐 때는 ‘아니오’라고 말해라.

‘예’나 ‘아니오’ 이상의 말은 악한 생각에서 나오는 것이다.”

‘You have also heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you make to the LORD.’

But I say, do not make any vows!

Do not say, ‘By heaven!’ because heaven is God’s throne.

And do not say, ‘By the earth!’ because the earth is his footstool.

And do not say, ‘By Jerusalem!’ for Jerusalem is the city of the great King.

Do not even say, ‘By my head!’ for you can’t turn one hair white or black.

Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’  anything beyond this is from the evil one.”
